Air India has placed a significant order for 85 Airbus aircraft, valued at over $6 billion. The deal, announced by Airbus on October 9, 2024, includes 75 A320neo narrowbody jets and 10 ultra-long-haul A350 widebodies. This move is part of Air India's ongoing transformation under Tata Group’s ownership, aimed at modernizing its fleet with fuel-efficient aircraft and reducing operational costs.
Initially, the buyer was undisclosed, but industry sources, including Reuters and Aviation Week, confirmed that Air India is behind the purchase. This order comes shortly after the passing of former Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, a key figure in Indian aviation.
The acquisition follows Air India's 2023 purchase of nearly 500 aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. With this expansion, Air India is positioning itself to compete more aggressively with domestic rival IndiGo by lowering ticket prices and expanding international routes.
